I quite liked J’lo’s weird twisted fauxhawk looking style the other week and decided to see if I could do it myself. So I took my unwashed filthy hair and started to create! It looked to me sort of like an upside down French braid in the back, maybe it’s a French twist, but all the gathering up the sides makes me think it’s the braid. So that’s what I started with…
I flipped my head upside down, (sorry no pics, was by myself, gonna make my 4 yr old learn how to use a camera soon I promise), then I started my sad attempt at a French braid. As a mother of a girl you would think I knew how to French braid, but I don’t, my girls hair is baby fine and wouldn’t hold a regular braid let alone a fancy one! So anyways, I pull and gather and make my way up from the nape of my neck to the crown of my head with this braid like motion.
I then get to the top and wonder what the hell I’m supposed to do now. J’Lo has some curly tendrils falling down her forehead that look pretty cool, so I tie my hair in a ponytail right at the top of my head and curl the end pieces that remain out of the ponytail…hmmm…it looks friggin stupid. Maybe it was my piss poor French braiding or maybe it’s that I do not have enough hair around my hairline to make it look good, but either way, it sucks.
So I took the extra hair and started playing with it, twisting it in sort of a pin curl motion. At this point it actually starts to look like the other inspiration pic we had up last week of Gwen Stefani, the one with that little forehead bun. I was pleasantly surprised, so I pinned it in and sprayed it. I smoothed my sides and pinned any unruly pieces of my poor-mans French braid. I ended up with a cross between two looks and really liked the end result…even got a compliment from the change room attendant girl at H&M! Whom I promptly referred to Mane Dish for directions on how to do it;) I only hope these directions help? H&M girl, if you’re reading this, tell me if it helped! And send in a pic of yourself if you try to recreate it!…please;)
