After realizing that they curl AnnaSophia Robb’s hair each day for The Carrie Diaries in order to look like Sarah Jessica Parker’s, we though it couldn’t be that hard to achieve curls that look like you were born with them. So we pulled out our tiny curling irons to see what we could create…
TOOLS NEEDED FOR SARAH JESSICA PARKER CURLS WITH A CURLING IRON:
Small barrel curling iron (I think mine is 1/2″)
Heat Protector spray (Chi 44 Iron Guard is my fave)
A clip or two to section your hair
Comb to tease the curls a bit at the end
Patience & Time
This technique did take a while – not including dry time, it was just over an hour to curl and style the hair. So a good one to make last for the second day.
If you want it to take less time, you can use a larger barrel curling iron or take larger sections of hair to curl, but the smaller you go, the more natural looking unruly curls you get and the closer they’ll look to Sarah Jessica Parker’s.
GETTING SARAH JESSICA PARKER SIZED CURLS
Take a small section of hair around the nape of your neck and clip the rest up. Spritz the hair really well with your heat protector spray, brush it through and give it a few seconds to dry.
Grab a small section of hair; the smaller the better. If you look at Sarah Jessica Parker’s hair, there are lots of tiny curls going on there. The bigger sections of hair you use, the bigger and looser the curls will be – you want them small and tight for this look. With the barrel pointing down and the handle above your hair wrap the section around the curling iron and away from your face (check out our article on how to get beach waves for the some curling techniques).
Get the curling iron as close to the root as possible and wrap the very ends around the barrel (being careful not to burn your fingers…I did that a few times). Hold it for about 10 seconds or until you have a bouncy, corkscrew curl when you release it. Gently let the hair unwrap from the barrel; don’t let the hair drop. The longer it can stay in curled position while it cools, the better the curls will hold once you’re done styling.

Continue to take small sections of hair from each layer you unclip. When you get to the top layers, part your hair where you want it and on either side of the part, wrap the hair down and away from the face.
STYLING TO GET SARAH JESSICA PARKER CURLS
|Curls after shaking out, before teasing|
Once you’re done your whole head, it’s time to shake it out; Sarah Jessica Parker always has a bit of unruly look so you definitely don’t want these curls too perfect. Get your fingers to the roots and rub vigorously to separate the curls. You can also go in and separate the curls a bit with your fingers like you’re stretching something apart.
To finish it off, I teased the hair by holding onto the ends and pushing the hair around the bottom up with a comb. You can also see on the photo before I shook it out, some of the ends are a little straight so I went back in with the curling iron, this time using the clamp, and curled the ends a little more.
TIPS FOR MAKING CURLS LOOK NATURAL
-as mentioned; the smaller the section of hair, the better – you don’t want any big chunks that are going to look blunt at the end of the curl, it should almost come to a point
-it’s important not to use the clamp, it just flattens the hair and gives it that “I curled it with a curling iron” look 😉
-vary the thickness of hair you take to curl – this will give different sizes of curls and tightness
I personally didn’t use hairspray or any styling products after the fact but if your hair doesn’t hold curl very well I would recommend a flexible hairspray or something like the Oribe Dry Texture Spray (another one of my faves)
|slept on curls|
These are the curls the next day. It’s definitely a little messy but with a few touch ups, they almost look more natural the next day. There are a couple sections that need touching up but this is straight out of the messy bun I slept in, so not bad.
