How to Use Olive Oil to Cure a Dry Scalp

So tonight we’re staying in and we thought; what better time to try out a deep conditioning treatment to help cure a dry, itchy scalp that comes along with our beautiful Alberta winters. We have a few favorite deep conditioners for repairing our dry strands (check out our Davines, Oribe and Brazillian Blowout Masque reviews and how to get the most bang for your buck) but have been hearing that homemade oil treatments are good for curing a case of the flakes. Read on for the recipe if you’re down for a glass of wine and some scalp conditioning tonight 😉

We’re gonna try a combination of a couple different hot oil/dry scalp remedies that we’ve read up on. Check out our review of this treatment.

3 tsp Olive Oil
1 tsp Honey

Warm the olive oil in a saucepan over low heat. Once it’s warmed, add the honey and stir until it is thoroughly mixed together. Remove the mixture from the heat and put into a bowl. Allow the mixture to cool enough so that you don’t burn your scalp and make sure you have some clothing on you don’t mind getting dirty or wrap a towel around your shoulders – if you drip any, it will stain fabric.

Once the mixture has cooled enough (but is still warm) apply it to your scalp then comb through your strands *I found a brush like the one on the left and it worked great for applying the mixture*. I like to grab a towel straight out of the dryer so it’s nice and warm, then wrap it around my hair while the oil goes to work (you can check out our other tips for getting the most out of your deep conditioning treatment). You can also use a shower cap or I’ve been known to wrap a plastic Safeway bag around my hair and use an elastic at the top to make it tight.

Grab your glass of wine, turn on Real Housewives and leave your oil treatment in for 15-30 minutes. Once your time is up, you can either rinse the mixture out, shampoo & condition as normal or try the next home remedy…

mix equal parts lemon juice & apple cider vinegar together (start with 1tbs of each) and apply to your scalp with a cotton pad (you do not want to get this mixture in your eyes). Leave this on for another 30 mins to an hour. Now you can rinse everything out and shampoo/condition as normal.

We’re gonna give this a try tonight and let you know how it works for us tomorrow. Let us know how you like it :)
